Flu Prevention and Treatment with Tamiflu
Influenza, or the flu, can be miserable, even deadly, for those afflicted. Flu season typically runs between November and March, even into early spring, and is caused by viruses which are highly contagious. Those afflicted can still infect others one day prior to the emergence of symptoms and for several days beyond that. Symptoms of the flu include:
Other possible symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, sore throat, and congestion. How long the flu will last depends on such factors as a person's age and overall health. For young children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems, the flu can be especially dangerous, causing complications like bacterial pneumonia, severe dehydration, and ear infections. It can worsen existing conditions like diabetes, congestive heart failure, and asthma.
Tamiflu is shown to have a minimal chance of causing negative reactions if taken with other medications, though it is always wise to first discuss all medications one is taking, both prescription and over-the-counter, with their doctor before using Tamiflu. There are special dosing instructions for those who suffer from any form of kidney disease, so it is imperative for patients to talk with their doctor before starting a dosing regimen.
For flu prevention, it is recommended to take one dose of Tamiflu a day for ten days. For flu treatment, the recommendations are two doses of Tamiflu a day for five days, starting within 48 hours of the onset of the first symptoms. Tamiflu can be taken with or without food, but taking it with milk or a light meal can help prevent stomach upset.
Though Tamiflu is well-tolerated, there are some possible side-effects to be aware of. It can make one feel sick to their stomach or disoriented shortly after taking Tamiflu, the risk being higher in children and teens. Other side effects may result from taking Tamiflu, ranging from mild to even severe.
Tamiflu is only available by prescription through a health care provider. Generally, adults feel better 30 percent faster, or 1.3 days, children 26 percent faster, or 1.5 days, when taking Tamiflu within the 48 hour window compared to those who do not take Tamiflu.
